THE FIVE ELEMENTS AROMATHERAPY SERIES
ACCORDING TO FIRST NATIONS’ THERAPEUTIC PRINCIPLES
The physicians and wise men of several nations throughout the world have developed their own theories about the elements in order to understand the complexities of the human being. The best known is that of the Chinese, with the elements Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, and Earth. The Hindus and the Tibetans also have similar systems. In Europe, before industrialization and the bulldozer of contemporary progress, the Alchemists also had a theory of the elements. We will describe here the elements theory of a Native American lineage related to the Cherokees (the Cherokees are a people that used to live in the southeast of the USA, and which is now present in more than a dozen states in the Center-South, Southeast, Northeast and Southwest of the USA). This lineage teaches knowledge of the elements and their correspondences in terms of human nature.
The elements are: Fire, Earth, Air, Water, and Sacred Sound. Sacred sound corresponds to what other systems define as ether or, if you like, the playground in which the other 4 elements dance and express the complexity of their infinite relations and combinations. All things are made up of these 4 elements, which unfold in the infinite space of ether. For example, when a tree burns, it first reveals the elements water and air through the vapor and smoke it gives off.
Then the element fire: the accumulated sunshine that is released in the flames and, finally, the element earth: the ashes that remain after combustion. In fact, the elements are contained within each other. The easiest to exemplify is water: the earth element in water is ice; it is water when it is liquid; it is air when it is steam; it is fire when the Hydrogen and Oxygen that it contains explode.

How to use this | THE NATIVE ESSENCES – HOW TO USE THEM These aromatherapy complexes influence the psyche, that is, they activate the deepest parts of the human brain. Here, powerful potential and little used capacities and abilities lie dormant. The Native Essences are not used for specific problems or pathologies. They act on what we call the «ground», that is, the foundation of the psyche and the dynamic internal mechanisms that govern our interactions with life, people, and everyday events. So the best person to decide which Native Essence to use is you! Here are some hints to help you. How do you choose the essence that is best for you? It’s simple: with your intuition and your sense of smell. Odors speak directly to the brain in a non-linear way, with a holistic simplicity that cannot be mistaken. Spray some essence on to a piece of paper, or on your skin or clothes, and then let the fragrance guide you. Don’t use your intellect, use your intuition! Another way of choosing is to follow the constructive cycle of elements. In sequence: sacred sound feeds fire, fire feeds the earth, earth feeds the wind, wind feeds the water, and water feeds sacred sound. But always, be attentive to your olfactory reactions. If a smell seems less pleasant or downright disagreeable, trust what you feel: that unpleasant essence could be useful in other circumstances, because your psyche is constantly evolving. How do you use them? As you would any perfume! You can spray some on a tissue or handkerchief that you carry around with you. You can also spray some in the air around you, or on the palms of your hands, the soles of your feet, your solar plexus, forehead, or fontanel. |
